Case Study – Lighting and Electrical for New Executive House

Anusha and Dilran Perera are working professionals with a small family. In the past they lived in a medium sized family house in Churton Park. However, they were conscious that their lifestyle suited a larger executive style property with more grounds and hence decided to build a new home in Whitby.

The Work: An Overview

Design Lighting Ltd was selected to design and project manage the installation and supply of a variety of lighting and electrical solutions for the Pereras’ new home. The project management involved co-ordinating the installation of the alarm and security systems by sub-contractors.

The Solution

“Design Lighting starts the process by completing a preliminary design concept based on builder’s plans. Discussions about the desired look and moods of each room were discussed with the Perera’s, as it is important to get customers involved in the lighting design of their home. As a result of our 30+ years experience we of course know what works and what will give the best lighting effects, so we will always suggest and assist with ideas.

An extensive range of lighting was used in the design, such as up-level lighting, down lights, step lights, good quality exterior lights, wall washed lights and pendants. We always put a lot of thought into the design, as it will change the mood of the rooms dramatically. It is critical that we plan carefully, as we know how important it is to keep within the clients’ budget without comprising quality.

Design Lighting specialises in doing a whole turnkey operation and that is what we did for the client. The benefit for the client is that one company provides the total package of electrical and lighting. You don’t have to go to 3 or 4 different businesses.

The Perera’s were existing customers already for about 5 years. They had visited the showroom a few times in the past to purchase lighting supplies and also had lighting and electrical work completed in their previous house.

With a modern house such as the Pereras’ it was important to put in the right technology to future proof the property. High quality data cabling, audio cabling and cabinets were installed so as to get the best possible quality output from electrical components such as the overhead projector and audio system.

The Front pillar lights look fantastic; we made sure that the design highlighted the front entrance and garage areas so that the house also had street appeal at night. The property also won the Master builders silver award in 2006, so we are proud to have helped the Perera’s achieve their award.” – Hans Glauser

“Thanks Hans, Ruth and the team at Design Lighting.

In our previous home we had used the services of Design Lighting for occasional odd jobs. We also had purchased 3 chandeliers from ‘Design’ that were really unique, which you don’t see anywhere else. As a result we feel that the property chattels valuation of our previous house were valued significantly higher and I feel that it was due to the lighting.

In our newly built home, we chose the lighting together with the help of Hans who did the lighting design and consultation. It took about 1 year to build the house, so it was great that we were able to meet often and when we needed to. Design Lighting would order in samples of products and we were able to go to their showroom and discuss the options. Based on seeing the samples, we were able to change from a standard type light switches to more unique better quality switches.

Hans always tried hard to achieve what we wanted and I felt that Hans went out of his way to help us. He also went out of his way to get better quality products and to organise the installation of the CCTV and alarm system. Design Lighting’s expertise was also necessary in getting the Bose audio system up and running.

Even though we chose the more difficult options, Hans was able to get around the issues, because that was what we wanted. We have found that everyone who sees the house admires the lighting.

We would absolutely use the services of Design Lighting in the future. We would happily recommend them as they went out of their way to make sure we were happy. The service has always been great and we got on very well with Hans and Ruth so that was a big plus”
